Easy Snowboard Buyer’s Guide

Step 1: Pick the Type

  • Beginner / All-Rounder: All-Mountain board (does everything, easiest choice)
  • Park / Tricks: Freestyle board (softer, playful).
  • Speed / Powder: Freeride board (stiffer, more stable).
  • Backcountry: Splitboard (for hiking uphill, needs special gear).

Step 2: Choose the Size

  • Look at the rider’s weight first. Heavier = longer board. Lighter = shorter board.
  • Quick tip: board should stand somewhere between chin and nose when upright.
  • Shorter = easier to turn. Longer = more stable and better in powder.

Step 3: Width

  • Match to boot size.
  • Big feet (US 11+ ) = look for Wide boards.
  • Normal feet = standard width is fine.

Step 4: Flex (Softness / Stiffness)

  • Soft = easier to learn, fun for park.
  • Medium = good all-rounder, most people buy this.
  • Stiff = advanced riders, speed, and steep terrain.

Step 5: Camber (Board Shape)

  • Camber: stable, good grip on ice (great for NZ mornings).
  • Rocker: easier to turn, floaty in soft snow (good for beginners or park).
  • Hybrid: mix of both — safest all-round choice.

Step 6: Women’s Boards

  • Designed lighter, narrower, and easier to control — better fit than just using a smaller men’s board.

Step 7: Bindings

  • Soft flex: easier for beginners and freestyle.
  • Medium flex: best all-round option.
  • Stiff flex: for advanced freeride and speed.
  • Make sure the bindings match the board mounting system (Channel, 4x4, etc.) and the right size for the boots.

Easy Pick Formula
  • If you’re new → Medium flex All-Mountain board + medium flex bindings.
  • Big feet → get a Wide version.
  • If unsure → choose Hybrid camber for the board.
